Dixie Park Branch Library (1961-1983) was renamed Culmer/Overtown Branch Library in 1983.Present Location: DIXIE PARK BRANCH 350 N, W. 13 Street FR. 7-5029 Date Open as Branch Dunbar, 1938 Dorsey Memorial, 19l*l, Dixie February 12, 1961 of M, P. L. i Historical Features: Type of Branch: Distinguishing Features to look for: Dorsey Branch, the first city owned building constructed for library purposes, wa3 a simple Georgian type building built in 19-bl and dedicated to D, A. Dorsey, late Negro philanthropist who gave the land through the persistent efforts of Mrs. Ann Coleman. Dorsey really has a longer city library history than any other branch having been known first as the Dunbar Branch and listed separately on statistical records as early as 1938, The Dunbar collection was housed in a small building in Mrs, Coleman's garden supported by the Friendship, Garden, and Civic Club which still lends moral support, Dorsey also has initiated and carried on Liberty Station in Liberty Square project community building since 1953. The big news of 1961 was that on February 12 Dorsey moved into new quarters to be known as Dixie Park, one of the nicest and best planned buildings of the Branch system, Dorsey remained as a Station of the new Dixie Park Branch for a time but was closed and used for storage purposes when the new Branch claimed its patronage.
