Jaylin Allen-Wallace interviews Edith Hilliard on March 29, 2016. Hilliard tells of her experience growing up in the Greenbush neighborhood of Madison, Wisconsin and the changing demographics of the city over the last 50 years. Hilliard also discusses the importance of church and community involvement, as well as her views on education and social conditions affecting African-Americans in the city.This interview is part of an oral history series done of residents of Madison on changes affecting the African-American community, beginning around the 1960s and continuing through to 2016. Three Madison high school students were trained in oral history techniques then interviewed black residents who had resided in the city for at least 20-40 years. In the interviews, students asked about four broad areas: 1) family history; 2) education; 3) work history; 4) and issues affecting the Black community in Madison, such as housing, educational opportunities, and racism and prejudice.
