Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Letter addressed from the Independent Office.Oliver Johnson inquires if William Lloyd Garrison is quite certain that he had not been paid for one of his articles published in the Independent, as Johnson states that the accounting ledgers show that a check has been issued for each article written by Garrison. Johnson assures Garrison that, should the check have been lost en route, a duplicate will be delivered. Johnson states that the "news from France" is wonderful, but expresses his fear that the new Republican government in France will be "upset by the mistakes of its friends and the craft of its enemies". Johnson adds that the French people remain a "puzzle" to him, but states his hopes that peace between France and Germany will soon be brokered.
