Description

A fair amount of this letter has been crossed out, presumably by May, who appears to have sent this letter to a newspaper for publication of some of its pages. At the top of the letter, May's handwriting reads, "extract of a letter from Rev. S. A. Steinthal to Samuel May Jr., Corresponding Secretary of the Massachusetts Antislavery Society." An additional note reads, "Please return this when copy is done with, to Samuel May, Jr., Leicester, MA., by mail."Holograph, signed.May's handwriting on the envelope reads, "Rec'd Sept. 1st."Title supplied by cataloger.Steinthal thanks May for his last letter. He informs May that Joseph Barker was not permitted to speak at the Manchester Anti-Slavery Conference. He praises the speeches given by Parker Pillsbury and George Thompson and discusses the treatment of the British colored seamen in South Carolina ports at length. Steinthal describes a controversy with Louis Alexis Chamerovsow.
