Hays, Brooks
Description
Typed letter to Hays' father regarding breakfast meeting with Chief Justice Earl Warren proposals approved by the special session of the Virginia Legislature. I am sure that Clyde Hickerson had something to do with it. The Governor had virtually repudiated the recommendations of his own commission (the Gray Commission) and was proposing to centralize all pupil assignment powers and, further, to deny State aid to any local district admitting as many as one pupil. The Chief Justice asked me if I had seen the newspaper report of this action and seemed to be tremendously impressed by it. I assured him that I had read it and I thought it might set Virginia back on the right road. I am sorry we confused things by sending word that I would be on TV Thursday evening. The President's cancellation of plans to attend changed everything, of course. With love,
