Clem Imhoff interviews Rev. D. W. Johnson on March 16, 1976 in Beloit, Wisconsin. The first in a series of three interviews by Imhoff, Johnson discusses his family background in Mississippi and his family's move to Murphysboro, Illinois. Johnson also discusses his move to Beloit in 1920 following recruitment by J.D. Stephenson, his work at Fairbanks-Morse, and the character of J.D. Stephenson. Other topics discussed include labor recruiting in the 1920's, and Johnson's religious faith. This oral history is part of a series of tape-recorded interviews conducted in 1976 by Clem Imhoff for the Beloit Bicentennial Commission with black and white residents of Beloit, Wisconsin, concerning migration of blacks to the city from Kentucky and Mississippi after World War I and their lives before and after the move.
