Hibbert, George H

Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.George H. Hibbert informs William Lloyd Garrison that he recieved the package concerning the "Chinese question", and has returned it to Garrison. Hibbert states that he was engaged in a debate wherein he argued for the "Christian side" of the "Declaration of Independence", but states that the audience voted against his arguments. Hibbert laments that "once again the oppression of a race finds defenders & apologists". Hibbert writes that on the Temperance question, there has been "retrogression" since the introduction of the License Law, claiming that it has "demoralized the public conscience" in a similar fashion as the Fugitive Slave Act.
