Description

A handwritten caption on the verso of this image reads: "Non'English speaking delegates. London Conf. 1881. Mr. Morse"This photograph depicts a group portrait of attendees at the Ninth International Conference held in Exeter Hall, London from July 31 to August 6, 1881. Men appear sitting and standing outside a big English mansion. George Williams appears sitting in the middle of the photograph. Mr. Williams was the founder of the YMCA back in 1844. He maintained a lifelong affiliation with the rapidly-spreading association, providing influence and financial support. Richard C. Morse appears in the photograph sitting next to Mr. Williams. Mr. Morse was appointed as the general secretary of the YMCA’s International Committee in 1872 - a position he held until 1915. Morse was one of the original members of the World’s Committee from 1878 to 1888, and was active in the New York City association. The 1881 Conference is remembered for approving the first YMCA logo, which highlights its values by featuring a reference to John 17:21: "That they may all be one...as we are one." As early as 1881, YMCA leaders believed the Movement could be truly international and united across borders. The photograph was taken at Exeter Hall in London. Exeter Hall was the centre of the anti-slavery campaign and influenced the UK’s foreign policy from the 1840’s until it was torn down in 1907.
