Description

This folder contains incident reports from March 1964. The majority of the incidents reported on occurred in Mississippi but items from Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee are also included. The usual litany of arrests, police harassment and brutality, attempts by African Americans to register to vote, and efforts to integrate schools are included. Trials of civil rights workers and problems with the fairness of the courts are noted. Fannie Lou Hamer's campaign for Congress is discussed and a letter from Julian Bond to Congressman Jamie Whitten asking that the arrest of two SNCC volunteers who were campaigning for Hamer is included. Several murders of African Americans are noted, including a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding Louis Allen's murder.
