Fremont, Republican candidate running on a "Free-soil" platform was defeated by James Buchanan the Democratic candidate. In this cartoon, Fremont is approached by 6 "would-be supporters… a prohibitionist-vegetarian, a feminist, a socialist, a free-love advocate, a Catholic priest and a free negro." (Murrell vol. 1, p. 185) Fremont promises that "you shall all have what you desire-..." Fourierism refers to an experiment in socialism that took place in the U. S. during the first half of the 19th century.
