Dr. Joel Lazinger was born on May 9, 1942. Lazinger recalls father’s war work and service on rationing board during World War II in Flint, Michigan. Recalls family members’ opinions of World War II, especially as Jewish Americans. Discusses the McCarthy era in the United States. Discusses impact of sports training and competitive sports on our society and the relationship between sports and aggressive behavior. Shares opinions of President John F. Kennedy, African Americans and the Civil Rights movement, the draft, early Vietnam War and young people’s sentiment about the war. Remembers growing up in a Jewish community and community members’ impressions of Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust. Describes Peace Corps and expat experience in Colombia in 1964. Describes Colombian government and military relationship with U.S. government and military, and a guerrilla movement in Colombia. Remembers impressions of Lyndon Johnson and his presidency.
