Description

View showing members of the Sons of Liberty and several African Americans (possibly slaves) destroying a statue of King George III in New York City, c.a. 1776. Numerous onlookers (including a contingent of American Indians) watch on from the streets, the rooftops and from apartment windows.; Part of a series of imagined views of North American cities titled 'Collection des Prospects' by Franz Xaver Habermann (1721-1796) and Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt (1755-1812) that were issued in Augsburg, Germany around the time of the American Revolution.; This is a fictitious view of New York City that likely borrowed features from several unidentified views of major European cities.; "La Destruction de la Statue Royale a Nouvelle Yorck." appears written in reverse along the upper margin.
