Description
Aerial photograph taken in the late 1800s of the United States Navy ships U. S. S. Passaic (left center), U. S. S. Phlox (docked at near wharf), and U. S. S. Santee (docked at far right wharf) and stables (left closest to water), laboratory (closest left), and steam building (right of center) at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The U. S. S. Santee was a wooden-hulled, three-masted sailing frigate; the U. S. S. Phlox was a steam-powered gunboat; and the U. S. S. Passaic was single-turreted, coastal monitor--all saw service during the American Civil War and all provided training for midshipmen at the Academy. The Passaic was stationed at the Academy from 1883 to 1892. (Editor's note: A note on the back of this picture gives the date as "late 1800s", but since the U. S. S. Passaic was stationed at the Academy from 1883 to 1892, the date of this picture has been changed 1883-1892, thus the Coverage (Time Period) of 1881-1900.)
