Description

Holograph. These notes pertain to a newspaper review of Harriet Martineau's Autobiography. "The Boston Evening Traveler says -- 'The silly attack on the Autobiography (of H.M.) caused a demand for that work. The ill-temper & ill-breeding shown in it (the attack) reflects upon the character of the author.'" Wants the Autobiography "destroyed as soon as you have read it." Dislikes being "placed in a needless contest with a silly woman and bad man."Also enclosed is an undated fragment that has the same Call No., Ms.A.9.2 v.5, p.39. It is perhaps by Maria Weston Chapman. The fragment consists of brief notes, with quotations and page numbers, perhaps corrections to Harriet Martineau's "Autobiography." See Call No. Ms.A.9.2 v.5, p.106 for a manuscript with similar notations.
