Description

In this letter, Emerson makes arrangements to lecture in upstate New York. Emerson lectured on American Slavery in Rochester on 21 February 1855 and in Syracuse on 25 February 1855. Abel Carter Wilder, a native of Massachusetts who relocated to Rochester and ran a mercantile business, was an abolitionist, congressman, and Mayor of Rochester, NY. Emersons remembered whimsy about not going to Rochester may be related to his half-humorous quip about Wilder and the founding of the University of Rochester in his lecture The Anglo-American.
