Description

This folder contains materials related to the National Conference of Black and Non-White Staff and Volunteers. In 1968, a group of Black YMCA directors attending a national YMCA conference called an ad hoc meeting to respond to racial discrimination within the YMCA movement. The National Conference of Black and Non-White Staff and Volunteers (BAN-WYS), also known as the National Conference of Black and Non-white Secretaries grew from this effort. Some of the materials are directly related to BAN-WYS, while others are related to issues around race and urban YMCAs with which BAN-WYS members interacted. This folder specifically contains miscellaneous publications relating to Black YMCAs, African American social and public life, and urban issues.
