Smith, Evelina A. S

Description

Holograph, signed.Evelina A. S. Smith describes the excited discussions in the town after the anti-slavery conventions. She tells about the crisis in the parish of Oliver Stearns, whose abolition sermons have kept a number of people from coming to meetings. The local newspaper seems quite altered in character; abolition has been freely introduced in its columns. She mentions preparations that were made for the Boston fair. She asks Caroline Weston if she is attending Ralph Waldo Emerson's lectures this season. Evelina A. S. Smith describes the favorable impression made on her by Frederick Douglass and Lane (a black man).
