Description
Charles Round Low Cloud, "Voice of the Winnebago," wrote the "Indian Report" column in the Black River Falls Banner-Journal from 1931 until his death in 1949. Born in 1872 near Millston in Jackson County, Low Cloud attended the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania and was part of the Indian exhibit at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. He began writing regularly for the Banner-Journal in 1931. Low Cloud's "Indian News" covered a wide range of topics, including town affairs, personal news, white-Indian relations, weather, religion, politics, tribal affairs, and World War II. His column was quoted in newspapers around the country and was even excerpted in Colliers and the New York Times. About 30 representative columns are reproduced here through the generosity of the Banner-Journal, who hold the copyright.
