Description

Three recordings of Harvey Gantt, including an interview and a speech. The first clip is less than a minute. The second recording begins at about 1:22, and is of Gantt speaking with reporter Adam Hochberg during the primary campaign. Topics include racism, Black voters' support for Sanders, Gantt's reasons for running for Senate and his place in history. New audio begins around 8:04. Gantt delivers a speech at Duke University during the primary. Gantt says that the same issues from his 1990 campaign are still relevant in 1996. Gantt explains that he cares about issues faced by working families, and criticizes his opponent Jesse Helms for not caring about those issues. Gantt discusses his kitchen table issues including sustainable wages, affordable health care, the cost of medical care, the environment, the hog industry's damage to the environment, and education as key to the American Dream. He further discusses education, saying the country needs education and a trained workforce to compete internationally, that the federal government shouldn't run local schools or colleges but it should invest, expand early childhood development (Head Start), support student loans, expand work-study, and a tax deduction for student loans. Gantt criticizes Republicans and Helms for raising premiums on Medicare, giving tax cuts to the wealthy, cutting student lunch programs, and supporting corporate welfare. Speeches followed by a question and answer session, with topics including the federal government's role in K-12 education and affirmative action. Recording cuts out mid-question.
