Description

This folder consists of WATS line messages from January, February, and March 1965. Although focused on Mississippi, reports also cover activities and incidents in Arkansas, Alabama and Georgia. Demonstrations in northern cities in support of civil rights activities in the South are mentioned. The usual litany of arrests, threats, intimidation, beatings, church burnings, cross burnings, school boycotts, and attempts to integrate restaurants, lunch counters and movie theaters are included. Voter registration activities and courthouse demonstrations are chronicled as are the murders of William Henry Lee and Donald Rasberry. The Selma to Montgomery March and reactions to the police brutality that resulted are covered as are various activities of COFO, MFDP, and SNCC. An attempt by an Aberdeen policeman to sexually intimidate two 17 year old girls is described.
