Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in ink on brown paper. Along the head edge of the first page, there is a checkmark and the number "36" written in pencil close to the spine edge, while towards the fore edge, there is a purple oval stamp including the words "Garrison MSS." There is a small horizontal tear on the first and second page but it has been repaired on the third and fourth page. On the fourth page, the writing turns vertically along the spine edge and just below the signature, a red seal is attached. Across from the seal, the letter is addressed to "William Lloyd Garrison Northampton Massachusetts."Edmund Quincy writes to William Lloyd Garrison giving an account of the last meeting of the American Antislavery Society in New York. He advises Garrison to take some time for relaxation, or a vacation, as he "owes it to the cause" to look after his heatlh. Quincy also discusses the temperance movement, claiming "the battle of New [and] Old dry is about to be fought in the Temperance Platform."
