This is a series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips related to commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. through both a national holiday and with first day cover stamps. The holiday clips are from January 12, 1979 and January 15, 1973. The Martin Luther King Black Heritage Series stamps were first issued January 13, 1979.The clips open with a shot of a full page of the Martin Luther King Black Heritage Series stamps. There are several shots of people at post offices purchasing the stamps, women creating the first cover envelopes, and individual stamps.The next series of clips include Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, Coretta Scott King, and Congressman Walter E. Fauntroy at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, January 12, 1979. Senator Kennedy vows, as chairman of the Senate's Judiciary Committee, to work toward passing legislation for a national holiday commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Beginning at approximately 3 minutes, Senator Kennedy is interviewed by an unidentified African American newswoman, possibly Monica Kaufman. She asks what difference he will make given that Michigan Congressman John Conyers had been proposing similar legislation since 1968.The next series of clips opens with Georgia governor Jimmy Carter sitting at a desk speaking on the telephone. Next he is reading a proclamation establishing that Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday is an official state holiday, January 15, 1973. This clip is at approximately 3 minutes, 58 seconds until 4 minutes, 49 seconds.The next series of clips are interviews related to Governor Carter's proclamation.
