voice Collected by Mary Celestia Parler; Transcribed by Neil Byer Theodore Mobley Newport, Ark. April 3, 1955 Reel 208, Item 2 Carve That Possum Don't you hear dem dogs a-barkin' And a-fussin' over dere, Like dey treed a possum, kittymount, A coon or grizzly bear? 'Nough to make a nigger's mouth a-water, Clear over here, When they think of coon, they calls 'em fat and fair. Chorus: Carve that possum, carve that possum, Carve him fair, Carve that pop-pop-pop-pop-possum, carve him fair, Give me shoulders, backbone, ham, De neck and de ribs, And I'll leave you all de tail and de hair. There's a possum sure as you're goin' to, Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, He's a-stealing and a-eating possum fruit, Oh, don't you see, He's a getting fat and sassy, In the old persimmon tree, But he tinks he'd like to have you let him be. (Chorus) Nothing suits this nigger better, When de leaves begin to fall; For a pot to hold the possum, See him right upon the wall, How he likes to eat that possum, And then grow both fat and tall, And a-be the Sampson with de axe and mall.
