The Givens Ephemera Collection contains diverse subject files on African American figures, with a focus on those in the performing and creative arts. This folder contains an autographed headshot of astronaut Guion S. Bluford, Jr. Bluford was one of 35 astronaut candidates selected by the National Aernatuics and Space Adminstration in early 1978 and became the first African American in space. Born on November 22, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bluford went on to join the U.S. Air Force before participating in four Space Shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992.
