Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. The number "12" is written in pencil above the first line.Luther Wiswall writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding Phelps' inquiry concerning the $5 which Wiswall sent to him in a previous letter. He writes about his interest in Phelps' articles in reply to Professor Stowe and he hopes they will be published once he's received criticisms. He suggests a tract be published explaining the objects of abolitionists. He explains his reasoning behind this: "the fact is, there is a large proportion of the community who are just about as ignorant of our principles as they were ten or twelve years ago..constantly meeting with thou who say 'if we must leave the blacks among us it is best they should be slaves.' 'It will not do to turn them loose.'...Our energies in this state I think will be put forth more systematically then they have been in years past."
