He was originally born Cassius Clay, but changed his name to Muhammad Ali after he revealed his membership in the Nation of Islam. Ali was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and refused induction into the United States Army. He was subsequently stripped of his boxing license and was on a three year boxing hiatus between 1967 and 1970. His return match took place in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970. Ali retired from boxing in 1981.
