Description
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands reviewed labor contract between landowners and Montgomery County, Alabama freedmen. This record has been transcribed as follows:Contract for labor on F.H. Cobb�s Plantation in Montgomery County Ala for the year of 1868 between the Employers and Laborers whose names are hereunto subscribed. The Employers agree to furnish one-hundred and sixty(160) acres of land more or less of which one-hundred are to be planted in cotton and sixty in corn. Five mules and feed for same, farming utensils and repairs for same any to cultivate the crop One acre of land for each laborer free of charge, also house- room and fire-wood. The laborers agree to feed themselves to cultivate the crop in such manner as to compare favorably with the crops of the neighborhood also a potato patch of two acres more or less for the exclusive benefit of the employers For and in consideration of a faithful compliance with above contract the laborers shall receive one third of the proceeds of the crop of corn, fodder, peas, and cotton made and gathered on the land cultivated by them. It is furthermore understood and agreed by both employers and laborers that the employers are authorized to give a lien on the entire crop *received by us* for the purpose of procuring supplies and ad to carry on said plantation*one hundred and sixty acres of land* It is also understood and agreed that should a laborer have before the crop is gathered he or...
