Description
Letter dated January 4, 1866 from Augustus (A. H.) Cason in Warren County, Georgia to James Francis Beall of Maryland. Cason describes building his house and making improvements to the land he recently purchased. He writes that although Beall's father has encouraged to him to move north and come to Maryland, where he could "make a fortune selling those washing machines," he feels it would be better for him to remain in Georgia and farm. Cason also describes how everything is in an unsettled state since slavery ended, and indicates that "most of the negroes" that are able to work have been hired, but many are "without homes or the means of subsistence."
