Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.On verso, the letter is addressed to "William Lloyd Garrison Care of Jos[eph] Cassey South 4th Street Philadelphia [Crossed out, and replaced with] Arthur Tappan Esq. New York." It is postmarked with a red, circular stamp reading "New-York Oct 25".Arnold Buffum writes to William Lloyd Garrison telling him he has written "a Constitution for the 'American Society for improving the condition of the free colored people.'" Buffum says he has had many donations for this puropse but no society exists to receive these donations. He belives "many would subscribe to such a society that will not subscribe to an Anti-Slavery Society ... although both institutions may be composed of the same people." Buffum insists that "it is of the highest importance" that the Society he proposes is organized the following week and asks Garrison to inquire at the post office in Philadelphia [Buffum mistakenly believed Garrison to be in Philadelphia] "for both letters and newspapers."
