Description

In this WSB newsfilm clip from December 4, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaks at a press conference and warns of the explosive situation caused by the bitterness and despair of a population living in poverty and challenges the federal government to address this injustice. King begins by stating that the United States faces a massive crisis that threatens stability. He notes that human rights workers, including those in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, are acutely aware of these problems. He discusses the disparities that exist between wealthy Americans and the poverty-stricken. He declares that this situation is causing "social insanity." He states that he holds both society at large and the federal government responsible for these conditions. Finally, he asserts that the federal government has the resources to rectify this situation but "lacks the will" to do so.
