Description

During the Civil War, James Hall served as a captain in Company K of the 24th Alabama Infantry regiment. In this letter he thanks his father for sending a slave to be his servant in camp: "Ben seemed much surprised to find camp life so easy. He is the very boy that I wanted. He seems well pleased. I did not expect you to send me one of your negroes, and assure you I appreciate your kindness in doing so. You did not say anything to Tom relative to Ben's hire. Please write me exactly what we are to pay for him, because...my mess is to help pay his hire and they of course would like to know and I would like to have everything arranged rightly." He also discusses financial matters (both his personal debts and money the company owes to the Autauga aid society for uniforms), and he asks his father to send some tents that one of his brothers left at home: "...the tent I have is not large enough for 4 of us. Tom Hines & Ben will make 7 and...some of us will have to take rain for there is no chance to get any sort of tent or fly here." A transcription is included.
