Deborah writes that "Ma was quite encouraged about Mary [Gray Chapman] when she heard she was able to take charge of the household." In a postcript, Deborah says that a book has been sent to Maria W. Chapman by [Charles] Sumner. Deborah said: "To see Sumner in the committee of Foreign Affairs where Mason lorded it, is a sight. ...Mason walks about like a caged tiger." She mentions a pamphlet by David Lee Child and Lydia Maria Child
