Description

The period between New Year's and Carnival is a time of many festivals in Brazil. The Feast of Bonfim takes place in mid January in Salvador, Bahia. It is an Afro-Catholic celebration in which Oxala (Oshala) and Our Lord of Bonfim (Our Lord of the Good Ending or Christ crucified) blend. The festival is one of atonement, spiritual cleansing, and creativity and is marked by the color white. The procession begins at the Church of Our Lord of Bonfim and many members of the community participate. Here, a man crushes sugar cane for the celebration.
