Description
Photograph taken September 14, 1929 of a float featuring a replica of the 1854 U.S.S. Constellation in a parade across 33rd Street east of Old York Road celebrating Baltimore's bicentennial anniversary. Sponsored by the Executive Committee, a group of Baltimore businessmen, this float paid homage to the last sail-only warship designed and built by the U.S. Navy. The Constellation played a significant role in the Civil War by disrupting the African slave trade. Later, it served as a training vessel for recruits just prior to World War I. In 1933, President Roosevelt established the ship as a national symbol. Spectators line the parade route.
