Lemmon, David Warfield, Azel

Description

Bill of sale dated December 21, 1843 for a Negro slave named Phesey and her two children Allen and Caroline sold by Azel Warfield to David Lemmon, both of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $300. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Nathan Shipley on December 21, 1843 and recorded by district clerk John L. Moore on January 3, 1844, the document identifies Phesey as age 19 years, Allen as age 2 years, and Caroline as age 4 months. If Warfield returns the $300 by January 1, 1846, then the slaves will be returned to him, with any interest on the $300 taken from the work provided Lemmon by the slaves during the interval. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
