This collection consists of personal letters from Ann (Mathews) Joor, the daughter of John Mathews, about the death of "Edward" and from William Joor about a troublesome slave. There are receipts from William Joor and Jonathan Cooper about the transfer of the slave from Savannah, Georgia, to Charleston, South Carolina. Also included are business letters between John Mathews and his cousin, Optimus Hughes, about the sale of James Island.Processing Information: This collection was re-processed in 2012.A transcription of the letters is included in the collection.John Raven Mathews (1788-1867) was born in South Carolina to George Mathews (1753-1815) and Mary Saltus Mathews (1761-1845). In 1806, Mathews married Elizabeth Whaley (1788-1860) in Charleston, South Carolina. They had eight children, including Harriet Emma (1820-1890), Ann (b. 1822), George (b. 1826), and William (b. 1829). Mathews was a plantation owner in South Carolina. He also owned James Island and John's Island, South Carolina, as well as property in Charleston and Savannah, Georgia.
