Knecht, Alcuin Conception Abbey (Conception, Mo.) Crisis (Firm)

Description

Du Bois informs Knecht that he is still in disagreement with him concerning the relationship between the "Catholic Church in America to the American Negro;" Du Bois believes that the "prejudice against Negroes in the Catholic church is just as strong as it ever was;" Du Bois discusses Catholic Charity as being done "in the most nauseating spirit of condescending charity and it talks of American Negroes as it would speak of South Saw Islanders, or untamed African savages." See Knecht's original letter to Du Bois (mums312-b186-i013).
