Congress of Racial Equality. Mississippi Fourth Congressional District
Description
The report that opens this folder describes seemingly endless threats and acts of intimidation around Freedom Day in Canton, including a police raid on the Canton Freedom House. The last paragraph of p. 4 tells an amazing story of fear on both sides--white and black--on the days leading up to Freedom Day in Canton. Some teenagers went to a constable's house, intending to apologize for a traffic incident, but were shot at and then arrested. There's a "diary" of Freedom Day in Canton (March 13, 1964) with a list of people who intended to try to register. An unidentified clergyman (?) describes his meeting with a pair of Mississippi heroes: Mr. and Mrs. George Washington of Canton. There's a document directed to local Canton officials regarding the economic boycott by African Americans in that city. Assorted newspaper clippings provide other details of Freedom Day.
