Encyclopedia article about the town of Newnan, Georgia. Newnan, the county seat of Coweta County, lies thirty-eight miles southwest of downtown Atlanta via Interstate 85. According to the 2000 U.S. census, the population of Newnan was 16,242 (54 percent white, 42 percent African American, 5 percent Hispanic, and less than 1 percent Asian or Native Americans), a 30 percent increase from 1990. Industries include warehouse distribution centers for large retailers, and steel, plastics, and motor production facilities. The University of West Georgia has an off-campus facility in Newnan.
