Description

Photograph of a historical marker at the site of newspaper editor Robert S. Abbott's childhood home in Savannah, Georgia, which was erected by the Georgia Historical Society on August 26, 2008. In 1905 Abbott founded the Chicago Defender, which quickly became one of the most important black newspapers in the first half of the twentieth century. The Georgia Historical Commission was the earliest statewide force for historic preservation in Georgia; the advent of the commission was the first time state government, rather than a private organization, became involved in historic preservation. One of the commission's major works was erecting some 1,800 historical markers.
