1942 photograph of a young African American newsboy selling copies of the Chicago Defender, a leading black newspaper founded in 1905 by Georgia native Robert S. Abbott. A large sack of newspapers hangs across his body, and he holds an issue of the newspaper under his right arm. A lamp post is visible behind him.The Chicago Defender covered events and issues in Chicago's black community, but also reported on racial news from the South and encouraged southern blacks to move north after World War I.
