Smith, Francis C Webb, William A

Description

Bill of sale dated July 18, 1859 for Negro slaves named George and Thomas Hall sold by Francis C. Smith to William A. Webb--both of Howard County--to repay a debt owed by Smith to Webb. The sale is in the amount of $301.65. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace David E. Hopkins on July 18 and witnessed by Saml. F. (Samuel F.) Simmons on November 28 and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins on August 2, the document identifies the slaves by name and age at manumission: Thomas Hall, to serve until he reaches age 25 years, about January 1863; George Hall, to serve until he reaches age 25 years, about 1867--both of whom came to Smith through the will of the late Laura Smith, recorded in the Office of the Register of Wills of Harford County, with the manumission of George and Thomas Hall prescribed. If, however, Smith repays the debt of $301.65 within the year, the present contract is voided.
