Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Letter is a copy of an unfinished letter from Mr. Estlin to Rev. Philip Carpenter. Contains an envelope from the "Rochester Bazaar" that says "Copy of an unfinished letter from Mr. Estlin to Rev. P.P. Carpenter (June 7 -'55). & of a letter from Mr. R. D. Webb to Rev. R. L.Carpenter." This second letter from R.D. Webb to R.L. Carpenter is not in the folder.John Bishop Estlin writes to Rev[erend] Philip Carpenter in regards to enlightening his sister Susan on the course she is now taking on antislavery matters. He is concerned of seeing her name as a receiver of the Rochester Bazaar. He writes, "It is very fine & sentimental to talk about helping all A.S. parties in America, but those who affect to do this are either very ignorant or have the true interest of the slave very little at heart. The Boston Bazaar is the one connected with the Am[erican] A[nti]. S[lavery]. Soc[iety]." Parker Pillsbury is a good "specimen" of them, he writes. He believes the Rochester Bazaar is instituted for the benefit of Frederick Douglass. He criticizes Douglass and says he is a man "keenly alive to his own interest, and those who know him least are satisfied that he left the American society when he found he could proceed his own interest best in other ways."
