Description

Douglas Fuller recounts service in the Navy from 1943 to 1948, where he served as a corpsman (medic). Describes working as a bellhop in high school in Oshkosh, Wisconsin prior to enlistment. Recounts boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Station, further training in Quantico and Norfolk, and then shipping out to Panama. Describes being in an early munitions convoy to escape without casualties around Cuba. Describes transfer to Nicaragua and being assigned to PT boat duty. Describes duty of taking venereal disease samples from the locals and providing prophylactics in Nicaragua. Describes going home to meet girlfriend at American Legion dance on New Year's Eve, 1943-1944 and proposing marriage; they were married three weeks later, before he was back in active duty. Describes getting an assignment with a domestic LST crew out of Norfolk, that sailed up and down the east coast for 19 months.
