In the interview, Mr. Styles describes his childhood growing up in Madison, Georgia and later in Atlanta, Georgia where his family moved in 1952. He talks about growing up in poverty and the strained relationship with various family members, particularly his father. He discusses sexual experiences as an adolescent growing up in Atlanta's Summerhill and Pittsburgh neighborhoods, and the secretive nature of his life. He discusses his artistic influences, including Hale Woodruff and Henry Tanner. He talks about the struggles he encountered in being recognized as a serious artist. He also discusses meeting his current partner and their relationship of over forty years.Freddie Styles was born in Madison, Georgia in 1944. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia with his mother and sister in 1952. He attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia and studied art. He continues to reside in Atlanta with his partner of over forty years.
