Image of C. DeLores Tucker (1927-2005) posed holding a plaque with Goldie Watson. Tucker was a political and social activist who was appointed secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1971. Goldie Watson (1910-1994), a teacher who stood up for her rights during the McCarthy era Communist witch hunts and went on to become perhaps the most powerful Black women in Philadelphia during the 1970s. Mrs. Watson was given control of Philadelphia’s $80 million Model Cities program. A few years later she became the city’s first Black deputy mayor under Frank Rizzo, in charge of politics and patronage in the Black community.
