Description

Bill of sale dated June 5, 1849 for a Negro slave named Sam sold by Isaac C. Anderson to Jonathan Marriott, all of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $300. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Nathan Shipley and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden, the document indicates that Sam will be about 24 years old on August 15, 1849. The bill of sale also references a previous deed of manumission dated April 17, 1823, which indicates that Sam is the son of a female slave owned by Charles Jessop of Baltimore County. Per the terms of the manumission document, Sam is to be freed on August 15, 1861, at approximately 36 years of age. Also referenced is a bill of sale for Sam dated November 10, 1847 from William Jessop of Baltimore County to Isaac C. Anderson. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
