Description

This folder contains materials created/collected by the Association for Voluntary Sterilization. The Association for Voluntary Sterilization was an organization advocating voluntary sterilization as a means of birth control and limiting population growth. It was known successively as Birthright (1943-1950), Human Betterment Association of America (1950-1962), and Human Betterment Association for Voluntary Sterilization (1962-1964) before becoming AVS in 1965. AVS was formed during a period of time where eugenics, or ""race improvement,"" was a popular scientific theory. Proponents supported sterilization of people deemed unfit for reproduction, whether due to physical or mental disability, social class, or racial and ethnic background. Materials in this folder specifically refer to Birthright’s tax exempt status, Cecil H. Gamble’s $10,000 contribution, the difference between sterilization and castration, Roman Catholic opposition to birth control, difficulty in determining who is ""unfit,"" race and sterilization, and use of sterilization for eugenic and for birth control purposes.
