Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed on stationery with an engraved image of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the first page. Under the image, the number "11" is written in pencil and there is a purple oval stamp containing the words "Garrison MSS."Milo A. Townsend writes to William Lloyd Garrison, congratulating him on "thy restoration to health, to home and the Liberator." He reminds Garrison of their "jaunt to the top of you Alum mountain", adding that Stephen and Abby Foster and Parker Pillsbury had also stood at the top. Townsend then describes the collapse of a building owned by the Excelsior Association that "crushed 17 of the inmates beneath its ruins." He discusses a new paper, the "Pittsburgh Saturday Visiter" [sic], started by Jane G. Swisshelm. Townsend calls her "a spirited and earnest writer, and grapples manfully with some of the popular, gilded sins of the day" and sends Garrison some recent articles she has written (not included). Before closing the letter, Townsend also says he "will try to write something for the Liberator, before long." In the postscript he asks Garrison to tell Theodore Parker he will soon write to him and he comments on the engraving of Pittsburgh, visible on the first page of the letter.
