View of a student outside the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, holding a bust of Eugene Talmadge and mimicking Adolf Hitler with other unidentified students who are protesting Talmadge's actions in firing professors and officials of schools affiliated with the University System of Georgia.Governor Eugene Talmadge initiated a campaign to replace or remove public university officials who he suspected of supporting the desegregation of Georgia's public colleges and universities. This culminated in a political battle over the firing of Dr. William Cocking resulting in many Georgia colleges losing their accreditation and support from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for "gross political interference."
